Reptiles

Class Reptilia

This week-long unit was planned right before Reptile Man was scheduled to come visit our school on a Friday.

[Reptile Chant]
I got this idea from the 90s Nickelodeon cartoon, "Rugrats." Inspiration came from the episode about Reptar on Ice, and the first stanza sounds like that chant that reads "Reptar, Reptar, gotta find that Reptar." Showing my age much? :)

                                                                      Reptiles, reptiles,
                                                                 Gotta find those reptiles

[Observation Journals]

Asking the kids "What did you learn?" is a great question for them to practice answering.  While the kids are drawing, I went around with a marker and wrote what they wanted to express.  Then, they did their best copying the letters and making their own sentence.

[Information Chart & Big Books]
Big Books are my favorite GLAD strategy! You create your very own custom-designed book with all the standards material you want the kids to know! Here, I'm reading my creation "Big, Big, Big Boa."

After the reading, I have the kids shout out what makes a reptile.  They are also able to come up and tape laminated pictures of real reptiles.

[Pattern Snakes]
As a math time activity, the kids enjoyed creating snakes using AB patterns.  This was actually a three step project.  First, they had manipulative time on the carpet creating their snakes.

Next, they had a bit more of a concrete activity.  They had to draw & trace their design onto a piece of paper.  Really tough for most of them, but it was a healthy challenge!

Finally, they colored their designs accordingly.

Some students even labled :)
