The Rainforest

[Transition Word of the Day]
All day, students are listening for me to say the Word of the Day.  They must respond along with a movement and then freeze.

Teacher Made Big Books
Big Books are so great because you can put anything in there! Although they do take some time to make, they are really fun to put together and once you have them, they're done! We used construction paper and sharpie to craft this sloth and then, we laminated him.  It's only about five pages long and includes some fun facts about sloths, but the end of the page always repeats itself: slow, slow, slow sloth.  After you decide what you want to write, you can go to google images and include all the color photographs you want for the kids to enjoy.  This is my FAVORITE  GLAD strategy :)

[Observation Chart]
Students walk around the room and find posted pictures of the rainforst and various rainforest animals.  They each have a sticky note they must write/draw on to communicate questions OR observations.  They must at least attempt to write a sentence or word, but I almost always make time to go around and ask them to verbalize their observation.  Then I can write what they want to say (since they tend to forget).  This is also very beneficial for the ELL kiddos!

[Art Project: Paper Bag Sloths]
This was actually an anticipatory set for ordinal numbers in math.  I gave the kids a step-by-step list of pictures to follow in order to put the sloths together.  Then I had them verbalize the steps to me before actually making the sloths.

[Ordinal Numbers in a Story]
The next day, I had the kids play with their sloth puppets for a few minutes.  Then, as a class we told a story about a sloth's day.  Even the ELL kids who are timid and shy can't help but laugh along with what their friends come up with.

After this is modeled, students have a chance to use their puppets with each other and role play a story.  When they are done, they must draw and write their story sequencially.

The play-acting really helps all of the kids come out of their box and is really a form of pre-writing :)

Toucan Art & Story Telling

Rainforest library book at carpet.
We don't have too many rainforest books in our library that are made for Kinders, but that doesn't mean they can't enjoy the pictures and draw their own conlcusions! Include your Big Books and you'll be glad to see how much they enjoy flipping through the pictures :)
