ELL Strategies & GLAD

Russian, Ukrainian, and Spanish are the three main native tongues I hear around school.  With so many Kinders still differentiating between English and their home language, GLAD strategies have certainly been a nice jumping-off point for me!

ELL and Kinder strategies naturally overlap, which is a blessing.  English speaking Kindergartener's don't know how to read or write as much as the next Russian speaking Kinder! :) Not yet anyway.

For our extended day Kinder program, I have decided to teach my assigned reading & math support curriculum through science.  Who doesn't love animals?

As a class, we will hit the science standard of being able to describe how animals depend on their habitats.

Sight words are often taught to be read, but we forget that ELL kiddos often times don't internalize what they mean.  Every few weeks, we choose 12 new words to learn.  The kids are shown real-life photos of the words.  Then they color their own pictures on the cards they are assigned.  Finally, I print them out nice pictures to go next to the words for them to remember.  Each day, I call on a student to tell me what one of them means.  They actually love this and think it's a game!
